Student gin competition: creativity and flavour

Every year, second-year Hotel Management students participate in an exciting competition to create the best gin at BUas. They come up with the flavours, name, and story behind their gin.

 

Gin, a popular dry spirit often enjoyed with tonic, is made from neutral alcohol enriched with botanicals such as juniper berries, cardamom, caraway, cinnamon, liquorice, lemon, orange, or coriander. Students are encouraged to experiment with and combine herbal, floral and spice extracts. 

 

Second-year Hotel Management students manage one of the Sibelicious outlets (restaurant, kitchens, visitor centre, storeroom, catering, bar and banqueting) for a week and are responsible for running their outlet as a team. 

In addition to supervising first-year students, the management team of the week is also tasked with creating a gin. By the end of the year, 25 management teams have created 25 different gins with their recipes. These are taken to a professional gin distillery, where the top 3 is selected. The Sibelicious instructors then choose a winner from this top 3.

 

The gin named ’Once and Floral’ is the winner of the 2023-2024 academic year. The students from the winning team, just back from their placements, were invited to Sibelicious to receive their gin.  Their gin will be the BUas gin for one year.
